The Sacramento Monarchs folded on Friday, a shocking and disappointing development for the WNBA and one of its original eight franchises. The decision was largely based on the Maloof family's desire to focus all its energy and efforts on the NBA's Sacramento Kings. Maloof Sports&Entertainment had owned both teams.

The Bay Area has been a desirable market for the WNBA and the availability of the Monarchs provides an opportunity to move a well-known franchise and broaden its fan base within Northern California   -Donna Orender

 

LEXINGTON, Ky. Kentucky coach John Calipari looked up at the clock after Miami of Ohio tied the fourth-ranked Wildcats with six seconds left and wondered if he should call timeout. John Wall didn't give him a chance. The heralded Kentucky freshman quickly grabbed the inbounds pass, raced by his coach in a blur and pulled up from 15 feet.

Retired NBA star Jayson Williams will not be in a New Jersey courtroom Friday to enter a plea in the 2002 shooting death of a hired driver. State Superior Court Judge Edward M. Coleman indefinitely delayed a hearing in Somerville in which Williams was expected to plead guilty. A person with direct knowledge of the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of a gag order imposed by Coleman, told The Associated Press that the delay was partly because of travel problems Williams experienced getting to New Jersey from his home in South Carolina.

I spoke with Jayson throughout the night and morning. He got very little sleep. He told me this morning that he will not be in New Jersey today and he has not signed any offer, but he is taking this very, very seriously   -Tanya Young Williams

 

Sowers was drafted in the eighth round by the Erie BayHawks. A year ago, Sowers became the first Warrior to be named honorable mention NAIA All-America. He received the honor after leading William Jessup with 17.8 points and seven rebounds per game.

Larry Bird and Magic Johnson will be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame this weekend. They will be joined by some illustrious company. Bird and Magic have a pile of NBA championship rings between them and Johnson also has an NCAA title from his days at Michigan State.
